Did you ever thought ever before how a PST file will be repaired if it gets corrupt somehow? But before you answer that, let's analyze how the PST file get's damaged. There are numerous reasons behind the corruption of the Outlook's PST file like it may occur due to unexpected system shutdown, abrupt Outlook application termination, oversized PST file, system crash, invasion of lethal viruses and infections and so on. However, to overcome this situation and to repair the corrupt PST file, Microsoft has provided an inbuilt utility with Outlook application known as Inbox Repair Tool or Scanpst.exe. But due the limited functionalities of this tool it fails to fix PST corruption issues in most of the cases. So, in such cases third party free PST Repair software is recommended.
To understand the situation in a better manner let's consider a scenario where user encounters an error message when he attempts to execute inbuilt Inbox Repair Tool. The error message states –
“Attempting to validate BBT refcounts
??Couldn't find BBT entry in the RBT (211C8).”
Cause:
Several causes can be responsible for the occurrence of this error message. It may be the increased size of the PST file which is limited to the 2GB causing this error message. Since the PST file size has gone beyond this size limit, it resulted into the corruption of the PST file. In the error message the BBT Entry signifies that Outlook has failed to find this entry for the PST file which has caused the error. Corrupt or damaged PST can also be responsible for this error message.
Resolution:
In order to resolve or fix the aforesaid error message user have to follow certain methods and ways as mentioned below –
- Ensure that the size of the PST file is not exceeded its size limit. In case if it has then decrease the PST file size by deleting the unwanted mails from the Inbox folder. Empty the ‘ Deleted Items ' folder and ‘ Sent Items ' folder.
- Use the inbuilt Inbox Repair Tool or Scanpst.exe to repair the corrupt or damaged PST file and see if the issue persists.
- If the problem is related to the BBT Entry, then freshly install MS Outlook application in your PC.
